Melancholic and beautiful, Farm 54 tells the story of Noga, a girl who grows up in the rural periphery of Israel in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
The semi-autoboigraphical short stories start with the drowning death of her little brother Amnon. It is a very touching story that starts with Amnon asking his mother “What day is it?” with his favorite day being “Tuesday, Twice blessed.” The subtext of this being that on the third day the Lord separated the land from the oceans and caused the vegetation to grow and “God saw that is was good” (Genesis 1:9-13). The last story in the collection tells of her entering the Army and going out on her first assignment. Noga’s story continues over close to 80 pages, with photographs at the end. A really quick read that captures your interest from the beginning and doesn’t let go until the end.
A very compelling read all in all.
